Whatever happened in my life, you were always there to help me to celebrate the good times, to soothe the bad, and muddle through the mediocre.

I was sick with withdrawal from you, but I felt your hold weakening. I spent years trying to leave you, but I never succeeded for more than a few days or weeks at a time. In fact, I was in debt because of you.

Actually, I take that back – you did give. You gave me heartaches and burned bridges. You gave me sorrow and torn-apart relationships.

I have no idea how I’m ever gonna eat crawfish again. The beach may have lost its luster too. I went without you this year, and it sucked, especially since you were cheating on me with everyone else. You were definitely putting on a show at the beach, and if you can remember, you finally won me over. Yep, you joined me for the drive home.

You helped me find even more ways to hide—the sex, drugs, and rock n roll lifestyle was a welcome pit for me to fall into. In the moments I got scared that I was sinking beyond my ability to return, you assured me I was ok, that together we would climb back out when I was ok again. You promised me you would help me be ok. You were so seductive to the insecure 16-year-old I used to be. You made me feel lighter in those early days. You made me feel like I could talk to the boys I fancied.

Going through detox and addiction treatment is effective, but it’s common to enter sobriety feeling like there are unresolved issues. Afterwards, I went to an inpatient treatment center where I made friends with a bunch of other people whose lives, like mine, you had wrecked. We bonded over and shared stories about what you’d done, what you’d made us do. This is my sobriety letter example, a beacon of hope for others who are struggling.
